How to make your AirBnB property more accessible for wheelchair users

Your AirBnB property may be more accessible than you think. Though not all homes will meet a potential guest’s needs, there are things that can be done to increase accessibility. Wheelchair users and people with limited mobility will really appreciate your efforts.

Can wheelchair users navigate your space?

You may have assumed that your space isn’t wheelchair accessible or suitable for someone with limited mobility. However, if you take a closer look, you may find that it isn’t as inaccessible as you think. For example, do you have a well-lit path? No steps outside or inside the property? A wide hallway? Adding these features to your listing with photos helps guests with accessibility needs decide whether your home will work for them.

Be prepared to answer questions from wheelchair users

It’s important to communicate with your guests about their needs. Measure the rooms in your home so you have the information to hand should anyone request it. Ensure you can accurately describe the objects in the property and bring their attention to any that might cause an obstacle. Take extra pictures if your guests request them. If you need more information, don’t be afraid to ask, and before accepting a reservation, make sure your guest has all the information they need. Proper communication by both parties before arrival will ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit.

Be prepared to make reasonable adjustments

It’s very helpful to guests if you are prepared to carry out their requests for making the space more accessible. AirBnB say ‘just as you might accommodate a late check-in time or help a guest arrange transportation to the airport, you are expected to accommodate reasonable requests to make your space safe and comfortable for guests with disabilities and other accessibility needs.’ These will be small requests that can be taken care of in just a few minutes. AirBnB give examples of these being things like placing household items such as towels, mugs and dishes at an accessible height or repositioning lightweight furniture such as chairs and tables to create a clear path.

However, if something isn’t reasonable, tell your guests. For example, you may not be able to move heavy items of furniture such as beds or wardrobes. This is especially important if you have physical limitations yourself.

Communication is key

Communicating well with your guests is the best way to ensure a pleasant and successful stay for both parties. If your guest indicates they have accessibility needs ask detailed questions about them. Be prepared to take additional photos and measurements so guests can get a clearer idea of whether your property will fit their needs. It may be worth considering adding some accessibility equipment to your property, such as a portable wheelchair ramp or grab rails in the bathroom. Making your property accessible opens it up to more customers. This in turn makes your AirBnB business more successful and profitable.
