However, whilst you wait for those changes to take place there are some smaller things you can do to make life easier, such as using portable disabled ramps. Here are some helpful ideas.
Can every home have disabled ramps?
Most homes can have ramps fitted over existing steps or slopes up to front and back doors. Things that were previously kept on high shelves should be moved so they are accessible. You may need to purchase new furniture that has been adapted for a wheelchair user. This could include kitchen worktops, sinks, desks and tables. Appliances also need to be accessible and easy to reach.
What if I only need a wheelchair some of the time?
If you have some mobility you may not need to fully adapt your home. However, some disability aids will be necessary. These may include half steps to enable you to get up small stairs or over obstacles. Grab rails can be helpful in bathrooms to enable you to get up from the toilet or out of the bath. Step stools are also useful for getting in and out of bed. The longer you live in your home with a wheelchair, the more obvious it will be what changes are needed. Implementing a few temporary changes first will help you figure out exactly what will help you live an independent life.
