Outdoor Half Step: Keep Fit Despite your Disability

With more and more people with various disabilities looking to lead normal, healthy, and active lifestyles, products such as an outdoor half step, exercise balls, yoga mats, and much more besides, are proving to be extremely useful indeed, for a variety of different reasons. We all know just how important it is to be fit and healthy, not to mention just how much fun it can be to engage in regular physical activity, so why should we let a disability hold us back?

Being disabled can make life testing, there’s no denying that, but it certainly doesn’t mean we have to become inactive. With events such as the Paralympics seeing such fantastic viewing figures, more and more people affected by disabilities are getting into sport and fitness than ever before. If you yourself suffer from a disability or lack of mobility and are looking to get into sport and fitness and keep active, or if you know somebody who fits the aforementioned quota, take a look at these handy tips designed to help keep fit and active, despite having a disability.

Make Use of the Right Equipment

As mentioned, pieces of equipment such as an outdoor half step, exercise balls, or yoga mats etc are proving very handy for people with disabilities and/or a lack of mobility. An outdoor half step for example, is a piece of equipment designed to make accessing vehicles, doorways, buildings, and other slightly more elevated locations outdoors, that little bit easier, though it can also be very useful for general exercise and physical activity. An outdoor half step for example, can be used to perform steps, similar in fashion to step aerobics, though obviously it doesn’t need to be anywhere near as physical. A yoga mat can make outdoor exercise more comfortable, and exercise balls can also be used for various exercises. There are many different types of equipment that can benefit you, so find what works best based upon your goals and requirements.

Take a Trip around the Local Park

When people think of keeping fit and active, they think of people jogging, running, cycling, or engaging in fast-paced physical activity, though in reality that isn’t always the case at all. If you suffer from a disability that means you have limited mobility but still want to get physically active, why not take a leisurely walk around your local park, either with friends or family, or even a care provider if required. You can go at your own pace, you can take in the natural beauty, you can get some fresh air, and you can burn calories and get some cardiovascular exercise in the process.

Swimming

Swimming is another fantastic form of exercise that is very popular amongst people with disabilities, due to the fact that the water not only supports your body, but it also provides added resistance whilst you swim, helping to tone your muscles and provide a slightly more testing workout. Not only that, but floating and being in the water is a great way of helping to relax and unwind. Many pools even offer specially created physiotherapy sessions aimed at individuals with various disabilities.
