Follow these tips to keep your wheelchair ramp in good working order for years to come.
Check bolts and screws
Our ramps are properly and professionally put together. However, like anything made using a modular design, the joining parts can become loose over a long period of time. Checking that bolts and screws are still tightly done up will keep your ramp safe and functional. Make sure you check bolts and screws on handrails as well as the ramp itself.
Check for settling due to soil conditions
We will ensure that your ramp is securely built on level ground, but over a period of time the soil beneath may. This can cause the wheelchair ramp to become less level and potentially hazardous. Checking for this on a regular basis will mean you are aware of whether this is happening or not and able to act if it is.
Regular cleaning is important
Clean your ramp regularly, or dirt may build up on the surface, causing it to become slippery. Keeping the ramp clean will maintain the grip of the surface and ensure you can keep using it safely and confidently.
Be extra vigilant with wheelchair ramps during the winter time
We design our wheelchair ramps with a ribbed surface which under normal weather conditions provides excellent traction, but freezing weather can cause these ribs to be filled with snow or ice and become slippery like any other surface. Keep your ramp surface of snow and have something on hand to add extra grip to your ramp. Sand, ash and even cat litter can be used to provide grip. Avoid salt as constant application may damage the surface of the ramp, and can also damage soil or plants nearby.
Don’t use the wheelchair ramp for any other purpose
Don’t store anything on your ramp or use the handrails for hanging things on. As well as creating obstacles, this can also obscure areas where problems may be developing. Don’t let children play on it as wear and tear could cause damage and shorten the lifespan of your ramp.
